Therapy for Adults Raised by Emotionally Immature or Unsafe Parents
Growing up with an unavailable, unpredictable, controlling, or emotionally unsafe parent can continue to affect your relationships long after childhood ends.
Anna Steele, LCSW, helps adults understand the patterns they developed to survive and helps build relationships with more clarity, trust, and emotional freedom.
Perhaps you learned that your needs came second
- Walking on eggshells around a parent’s moods
- Feeling responsible for keeping the peace
- Being expected to act like the adult
- Having your emotions dismissed or criticized
- Receiving affection only when you behaved a certain way
- Feeling selfish or guilty when setting a boundary
- Doubting your own memories or reactions
- Entering relationships where your needs are overlooked
These responses may once have helped you stay connected or emotionally safe. As an adult, the same patterns can become exhausting and difficult to change alone.
The relationship may have changed, but the pattern can continue
- Suppressing anger, sadness, or disappointment
- Monitoring others for signs of conflict
- Working hard to earn approval
- Avoiding asking for help
- Taking responsibility for others’ emotions
- Staying in relationships that feel familiar but painful
- Disconnecting from your own needs
- Feeling guilty when protecting yourself
These are understandable adaptations, not personality flaws. Therapy can help you recognize them and begin developing new ways of relating to yourself and others.
You don’t need the perfect label for your parent
You may describe your parent as emotionally immature, unavailable, narcissistic, controlling, manipulative, unpredictable, or emotionally unsafe.
You may also feel uncomfortable using any label.
Therapy does not require diagnosing your parent. The focus can remain on what you experienced, how it affected you, and what you need now.
You can work toward
- Trusting your own emotional experience
- Setting boundaries without being overwhelmed by guilt
- Stopping automatically taking responsibility for everyone else
- Understanding why certain relationships feel so compelling or difficult
- Experiencing grief, anger, sadness, and love more safely
- Recognizing emotionally unsafe dynamics earlier
- Developing relationships based on mutual care
- Building a stronger and more stable sense of self
- Deciding what kind of relationship you want with your parent
The goal is not to tell you whether to forgive, confront, distance yourself, remain connected, or end contact. It is to help you make decisions with greater clarity and emotional freedom.
Therapy that addresses more than the surface pattern
Anna uses a trauma-focused and attachment-informed approach. Therapy is shaped around your experiences, goals, and comfort level rather than a predetermined formula.
Her work may draw from attachment-based therapy, Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, somatic approaches, psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches.
You don’t need to choose a treatment method before contacting Anna. During your consultation, you can discuss what you’re experiencing and whether her approach feels like the right fit.
